Looks

Have you ever been faced
with a scenario like this? It's the morning of an enormous
protest outside of a slaughterhouse. You've just put the
finishing touches on your 'Meat is Dead' banner. Searching
through your closet, you realize that you have not a thing
to wear. You reach for the only organic cotton shirt and
hemp pants you own but suddenly remember that you wore
that ensemble to the last rally. You panic! You need to
be rescued from your fashion hell!
Okay, so maybe this scene is slightly embellished. On the morning
of an important protest, you probably have deeper issues on your
mind than your wardrobe. But should you?
Three years short of a decade ago, I became a vegetarian. This
was a pivotal period in my life. I began eating better by not consuming
animal flesh and honestly, I thought it ended there. One day while
enjoying a salad, I glanced down at my shoes and dropped my fork.
Leather? Yuck! I immediately ran out to the store to buy a pair
of man-made shoes. Three days later, I was still searching and
it continued for months. I decided to slowly phase leather out
of my wardrobe while scouring the City for replacements. Eventually,
through diligent work and research, I found a few stores that satisfied
my need. Shortly after that, I realized that clothing also contributes
to pollution and ecological damage. Now what do I do? Go naked?
This is precisely why in this month's Satya, with the help of talented
models Jenn and Greg, we've highlighted some ethical choices for
your wardrobe. In these few pages, you will observe that a vegetarian
or vegan does indeed have options for a cruelty-free closet. By
sporting clothes made from hemp or organic cotton or by wearing
non-leather shoes, you make a statement about the choices you've
made.
I must warn you, however, that in one of the pictures, Greg's jacket
contains organic wool, an animal product, and that some of the
shoes displayed are plastic, which in some cases can pollute. If
these are not fashion or life choices for you, please disregard
them. With the varying levels of commitment to cruelty-free living
in mind, we've offered many options, and you'll find alternatives
to wool jackets and plastic shoes.
Because of the hip and fun look of these clothes, we no longer
need fall victim to the fashion police. So, all you conscientious
shoppers out there, check out these fresh new looks. Now maybe
the next time you have an important event to attend, you'll look
stunning. Who says we can't change the world and look fabulous
in the process? |
