Bully! Master of the Global
Merry-Go-Round
By Sue Coe and Judith Brody
It should come as little shock to fans of artist Sue Coe to learn that
she is no admirer of George Bush (who is the “bully” in
the title) or his administration. A fantastical illustrated novel, Bully! is
Coe’s fiery protest against the erosion of democratic
and human rights in the U.S. and a biting indictment of the Bush administration.
Based on a series of prints by the artist in combination with witty
narrative, Bully! takes aim at the Bush administration, portraying
cabinet members as grotesque
players in a rotten global merry-go-round. There’s Condi as the siren of
an oil tanker; honest-faced Rummy fixing his shell game; Cheney, the ugly manipulative
octopus; and Dubya going wild on his stick horse.
Bully! is a condemnation of all abstract or religious fundamentalism
and greed,
and a cry for universal respect and compassion. It’s an honest lampooning
of what is truly a mad, mad, mad world.
Bully! Master of the Global Merry-Go-Round by Sue Coe and Judith Brody is available
in paperback from Four Walls Eight Windows for $18 (www.4w8w.com). To learn more

Some prints from
Sue Coe’s Bully! are on view at Galerie St. Etienne (24 W. 57th Street,
