How to Be An Activist: Civil Disobedience is a Viable Tactic for Change
By Crescenzo Vellucci

Nonviolent civil disobedience (CD) reaffirms our commitment to peace and freedom, not just for human animals, but for those nonhuman animals oppressed, enslaved, tortured and killed because of their species. But just why is civil disobedience such a successful strategy? Crescenzo Vellucci explains.

Media

The media flocks to civil disobedience actions. In the 1980s, CD actions throughout the U.S. mobilized a young movement and caught the attention of the news media. Through this "news" coverage, activists eventually receive the credibility that results in longer, more in-depth stories later.

Resolve

When we risk arrest, we are showing the world -- the news media, the animal oppressors, the public and politicians -- that we believe in our cause, and that we will go to jail if necessary to defend the billions who cannot speak for themselves. When we back off, agree to stand in "free speech" areas, away from our targets, we show that we do not have the resolve to fight this battle to the end.

If I Get Arrested, Is It Worth It?

When you risk arrest, you increase the possibility of media coverage, causing your target to spend money (possibly losing business), and thereby energizing yourself and others.

But What About Court? Is It Worth It?

Yes! Many activists don't like court, but it is an opportunity to educate jurors, witnesses, judges, lawyers, court clerks, bailiffs and many others (let alone the news media which often covers court cases) about the cause. Even if there is a trial and you are convicted, there is not much risk to you personally. If you receive community service, you can educate others in the community about the movement; and if you go to jail you can educate other inmates, jailers and others about the plight of animals.

The truth is we cannot lose if we risk arrest, or are arrested acting as conscience for the animals. If the charges are dropped, we can then continue our animal work. If they pursue the charges (which is rare) then we have increased opportunity for media and education.

Usually, getting arrested for the animals is not even as serious as a speeding ticket. Generally, it will not cause you to lose your job (only felonies do that), and rather than hurt your credibility and reputation, arrest for nonviolent civil disobedience in order to stop cruelty to animals is nothing of which to be ashamed. You'll find most people, even those who appear to care little for the cause or animals, respect you for your stand.

In short, civil disobedience is for everyone. Young, old and of varied and different socioeconomic backgrounds. The more of us who refuse to yield when told to do so, and instead stand together and for the animals, then the sooner real liberation will be achieved.

There is no one way to true liberation. But, if you follow your heart and put your body on the line, the feeling you get will tell you that you are on the right track to that final victory.
