About Us: Satya Employees

Satya Magazine is a monthly publication focusing on vegetarianism, environmentalism, animal advocacy, and social justice.  In Sanskrit, "satya" means "truth," and formed the basis of Mohandas Gandhi’s Satyagraha or "truth action" movement for Indian self-sufficiency.  Satya Magazine is committed to continuing Gandhi’s legacy by increasing dialogue among activists from diverse backgrounds and engaging readers in ways to integrate compassion into their daily lives.

Editor-In-Chief Catherine Clyne

Catherine Clyne

Catherine Clyne, Satya's Editor-in-Chief, has been a writer and ethical vegan half her life. Prior to joining Satya in 1999, Cat worked in the music industry and the nonprofit sector for over a decade. She holds a Master's degree in religious studies from New York University. Through the monthly publication of Satya, Cat seeks to develop common ground among activists, deepen understanding about issues of compassion and nonviolence, and challenge readers to examine different points of view. To learn about Cat's path to vegan enlightenment read "Anatomy of an Awakening" and “The Sum of Our Parts”. Read about her adventures with cats, loss and love in “Looking for Sanctuary?” and her visit to the Fauna Foundation in “Embracing Vertigo”.

Managing Editor Kymberlie Adams Matthews

Kymberlie Adams Matthews, a long-time animal activist and vegan, was raised on a small animal sanctuary where she was taught to respect all living creatures. Prior to joining Satya, Kymberlie worked with several national animal advocacy organizations. She holds degrees in psychology and anthropology from the State University in New Paltz and is a graduate of the University of Missouri-Columbia, National Cruelty Investigations School. As an open lesbian, she values bringing queer issues into the pages of Satya. Kymberlie currently lives in Brooklyn with three misbehaved dogs and three over-sentimental cats. You can often find her baking cupcakes, knitting scrabble cozies or playing with scary vintage dolls. Read some of her recent rants, “Rose Colored Glasses”, “ Brooklyn Birds” and “Tick-Tock”.

Assistant Editor Sangamithra Iyer

Sangamithra Iyer

Sangamithra Iyer is a licensed professional civil engineer who has spent a lot of time playing with dirt. She holds a Bachelor's degree from the Cooper Union and a Master's degree from UC Berkeley. Sangu considers herself a plant-eating primate who is humbled to have been in the presence of great apes. To learn more, read her article “Amahoro in the Kingdom of Gorillas.” Sangu is also a producer of the Women's Collective radio program on the Pacifica station WBAI, and volunteers with the Darfurian Community in Brooklyn . In her editorial, “A Troubling Ambivalence,” Sangu makes connections between environmental and social injustices. She enjoys reading books, playing ping pong, and eating desserts. She lives in Brooklyn where she often hits the parks with her rescued pit, Moo Cow.

Marketing Manager Eric Weiss

As Marketing Manager, Eric takes great pride in helping to promote the ethically run businesses that advertise with Satya. Currently celebrating his fifteenth year as a vegetarian (thirteen of them as a vegan) Eric enjoys bicycling, swimming with the Coney Island Polar Bear Club, attending baseball games and cooking fine vegan meals in his George Foreman Grill. A Queens native, currently living in Brooklyn, read Eric’s “A Lifer’s Guide to NYC”.

Circulation Manager Maureen C. Wyse

Maureen C. Wyse, a vegan, animal activist and writer, finds happiness in desserts, rain and kitties. After arriving from Seattle, Mo completed her degree in political history and economics at the Gallatin School of New York University. After writing, "What are We Fighting For?", a history on vegan hardcore music for the May 2005 issue, Mo joined the Satya staff. She applied for an internship, and since has become our circulation manager the best tabler in the world. She loves bringing some of her personal hopes for the environment, animal rights, and social issues to the Satya scene. While not at the office, Mo can be found drinking fair trade coffee in her Brooklyn loft with feline friends, Newman, Elliot and Taco-Bella.
